Brenda & Roger's Travels: End of another summer in Eagle Nest

I can't believe this summer's almost over! We've had a great time in Eagle Nest the past few weeks, but it's about time to head back to Arklahoma for awhile--especially since snow is now being seen on top of Mount Baldy and Wheeler Peak. As long as it's been since I updated the blog, it's hard to know where to start.

Roger's taken several motorcycle rides and I've spent a lot of days playing a card game called 3-13 in the game room here at the park. There have been several pot luck dinners that we've enjoyed very much. We've also taken several day trips to see some places we hadn't visited when we were here in the past.

Eight of us made a trip to Los Alamos one day...it was really interesting to go to the museums there with Jack who had worked there years ago. This is where the Atom Bomb was produced as well as housing many of our nuclear weapons. When the facility was built (1942-1944) it was a highly secret project that not even the families of those living here were allowed to know existed. One of the most interesting and exciting things about this area is the opportunity to see wildlife. We frequently see deer, but not often as impressive and easy to photograph as this guy was:

Several mornings we've had a herd of elk practically outside our front door--one of the few things I don't mind getting up early for. Here are pictures of them taken on two separate mornings:

This year we've seen three bears...Poppa Bear was HUGE and we saw him the day we took the drive through Valle Vidal. He was right beside the road, but I was in the third vehicle back with the camera so he disappeared into the trees before I could get a picture of him. However, Momma Bear and Baby Bear were spotted in a field near Cimarron one morning when we were going for breakfast at the St. James Hotel. I was REALLY glad I'd gotten up early that morning or I'd have missed getting these shots:

We have fabulous sunsets here in our favorite summer home and in closing we'd like to pay tribute to those who lost their lives on 9-11 ten years ago and all those who have given their lives in service of our country both before and since that date.
