13-year-old grandson Matthew went to Little Rock Thursday for a Duke University Recognition Ceremony for Arkansas 7th-graders who had outstanding scores on a recent SAT or ACT test. Only those students with high scores on a previous standardized test were invited to take one of the tests. His was the ACT and he scored a 23, which put him in the 93rd percentile of those 26,000-plus students in the 17-state region that took the test. I'm not sure I understand all I know about this, but it WAS quite an achievement and we're really proud of him!
Daughter Lisa just returned from a quick trip to Japan. As most of you know, Lisa works for an airline and is always hopping off with a friend to places that take more time to get to than she has to spend when she arrives. But this was probably the most exotic of her trips to date. The neat thing (for us) about this one is that she had a little time to spare and went to the internet center at the hotel and we sent messages back and forth online (through Facebook) for a few minutes while she was halfway around the world. Yeah, I know people do this all the time, but it was such a shock when she popped up on my computer!
Grandson Brian is co-captain of his college flight team and they're in St. Louis this week for a national flight competition. Sunday morning he called and said they were leaving school and they'd be flying over us on their way from Durant, OK, to St. Louis. He was flying a Cessna 172 and there were 2 Cessna 150's We walked to the end of our driveway for a better view to watch, listen, and wait out in the open at the top of our hill:
We finally heard a small plane, looked up and he was right above us. We waved and he dipped his wings, circled a couple of times and headed on out. A few minutes later, all three planes made another pass and off they went. We're wishing them good luck in the competition--but just making it to the Nationals is a big accomplishment!
A couple of weeks ago, granddaughter Amber was elected co-captain of her high school's cheerleading team for next year, so congratulations to her, too! Since she'll only be a sophomore, that's quite an honor. (OK, unless she goes to cheerleading camp this summer, we're not talking about travel here--but we're proud of her, too, and just had to add her to this list!)
Our almost-6-year-old grandson Timothy hasn't won any big awards lately, but he did read a book to us the other day about trucks traveling down the highway. We were astonished by some of the BIG words he could read in kindergarten! I remember my first-grade reader being something like "See Spot. See Spot run." And since computers hadn't yet been invented then, it's amazing how these little ones can find their way around cyberspace!
Last but not least (hmmm....maybe he IS the least!) there's great-grandbaby Ryder who's getting ready for his first plane trip tomorrow. He's going with his mom and his other Nana to Washington, D.C., to visit his aunt (his mom's sister) for a few days. We'll miss him, but hope they have a great trip.
