Red River to Questa via Cabresto Lake

It started raining Friday night and kept it up all weekend, so we weren’t “out and about” for a few days which explains the lack of updates on the blog lately.

We did have a wienie roast and entertainment here at the park Friday evening that was lots of fun and had just returned to the motorhome when the rain started. Kiwi played the bass, Charlie played guitar and both sang a lot of old gospel and bluegrass songs. Even though their music isn't our favorite genre, we thoroughly enjoyed listening to them--so much so that we went to the Community Center here in Eagle Nest to hear them again on Monday night! Thank goodness we had Nascar racing to occupy a good bit of our time Saturday and Sunday since it wasn’t nice enough outside to do much of anything else. But speaking of weather—we have some friends who just started full-time RVing this year and their mantra is “Chasing the 70’s”. While I agree that temperatures in the 70’s sounds great, I’m not sure that’s possible, even when your house does have wheels! Too often those 70’s are accompanied by rain or wind.

We’ve found that April-May in the spring and October-November in the fall is just about perfect in Arklahoma, but in the summer and winter everywhere is either too hot or too cold or too rainy or too windy. The part of New Mexico that we’re in now (what’s called the Enchanted Circle) has had a good bit of rain this summer, but most days we’ve had highs in the 70’s, lows in the 40’s, with at least a good bit of sunshine--and some gorgeous scenery--so we can’t complain too much about the occasional rainy days. It's definitely still been preferable to the high 90’s and 100’s of Arkansas or the 30’s to 60’s of Colorado.

Anyway, the rain stopped Monday, so yesterday we took a drive to Red River and across the back way to Questa, partly in search of some boondocking spots to go to sometime in the future. I have to admit, though, that since we've found the park we're in now, I'm not so sure I'd want to spend much time boondocking in this area! Some other RVing buddies, Mike from Dallas and Gary and Jewel from Crystal City, Texas, had arrived here the park over the weekend, so they joined us and Bobby and Melba for the trip. Cabresto Lake was “just” two miles from the road, but it was a rough 4-wheel-drive road for those four miles roundtrip. Once we arrived at the lake, though, it was worth the drive—just a small fishing lake nestled in the mountains, but quite scenic.

We had lunch in Questa then returned to Eagle Nest by way of the paved highway. Our evening was spent in our usual fashion, sitting around visiting with our friends and watching the hummingbirds fight over the feeder.
